SR 2002-A01 Burnham Bridge Replacement

PennDOT District 2-0 retained Gibson-Thomas to design the replacement of the SR 2002 Section A01 bridge in Burnham Borough, Mifflin County. The existing single span concrete closed spandrel arch bridge carrying SR 2002 (Freedom Avenue) over Kishacoquillas Creek represented a critical linkage between residential and commercial areas of the Borough.
The critical nature of this structure and the lack of sufficient detour routes posed a challenge to the design team. The solution to this problem was a temporary roadway measuring over 700 feet long and a temporary bridge over the creek. The temporary roadway included an intersection with Railroad Street to maintain connectivity to several businesses and residences.
The urban nature of the project site also led to design challenges. These included coordination with adjacent businesses, relocation of several utilities (both temporary and permanent), avoiding impacts to an adjacent railroad crossing, and including accommodations for pedestrians and bicyclists.
