SR 0034 Spring Road Bridge

The Spring Road Bridge carries SR 0034 over the Conodoquinet Creek in North Middleton Township, Cumberland County.  The existing 190′, two-span thru-girder structure was replaced with a 190′ prestressed concrete adjacent box beam bridge utilizing 48″x33″ box beams.  The design incorporated widening the narrow shoulders to 7 feet to accommodate non-motorized users, and also utilized a shorter alternate bridge barrier to improve sight distance with an adjacent intersection. The project involved archaeological investigations and mussel surveys within the stream. The project required close consultation with regulatory agencies for construction of a temporary causeway and development of an Aids to Navigation Plan as the Conodoquinet Creek is listed as a Pennsylvania Water Trail by the PFBC.  The project was advanced nearly a year to take advantage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Funding.  Department staff indicated that “Gibson-Thomas did an excellent job delivering a high profile stimulus project.  The firm adjusted well to an aggressive schedule and still managed to deliver a quality project.”  This project won the AASHTO-sponsored America’s Transportation Award 2010 for the Northwest Region.
