Valley Brook Bridge #2

The Valley Brook Bridge #2 project was a design-build endeavor completed in partnership with Marricco Construction Co. The structure was the second phase of a two-bridge project for the Montour Trail Commission. The bridge carries the Montour Trail over SR 1010 (Valley Brook Road) west of the intersection with SR 0019 in Peters Township, Washington County.

The project involved placing a new trail bridge on a set of abandoned railroad abutments and constructing a short segment of trail on the approaching railroad grade. The new structure is a single span composite welded plate girder bridge with a span of 170’-0” and a cartway width of 12’-0”.

Gibson-Thomas reviewed the preliminary engineering plans and proposed a revised vertical alignment for the structure and trail approaches. This change permitted the use of a crushed stone surfacing similar to the adjoining trail network rather than a bituminous pavement. The reduced earthwork also allowed for the use of gabion basket walls instead of solider pile walls.  Other design activities included coordination of utility relocations, Traffic Control Plans, and Erosion and Sediment Pollution Control Plans.

The Valley Brook Bridge #2 was opened to trail traffic in October 2015.
