Cherry Run Bridge
The Cherry Run Bridge project was designed for Indiana County and involved the structure carrying T-600 (Smith Road) over Cherry Run. The project site is located northwest of Homer City in Center Township and is immediately downstream of our Fitzgerald Bridge project.
The existing 33’-6” span concrete-encased steel multi-girder bridge at the location was listed as structurally deficient and functionally obsolete. The cartway width was limited to 16’-0” and the 10-year flood event nearly overtopped the structure.
The proposed structure was a prestressed concrete spread box beam structure with a span of 55’-6”. The structure and the roadway approaches were raised such that the 10-year storm would be passed by the structure and the 100-year storm would only overtop the roadway at the adjacent profile low points. The cartway was increased to 28’-0” to safety carry two lanes of traffic and large agricultural vehicles. Underground telephone and gas lines were relocated around the construction area, and temporary protective fencing was provided along an archaeological site to the northeast. Drainage swales were provided in three quadrants of the structure and stream flows were maintained using temporary stream diversions. Traffic was detoured around the site during construction.
The Cherry Run Bridge project was completed in 2010.
